We’ve Become a Throw-Away Society.
Everything’s designed for convenience, for the quick fix, for “out with the old, in with the new.” And yes — we live in a society that’s fine with tossing things away rather than repairing them. But what does that say about us? What does that say about how we view work, durability, commitment and one another?
I believe there’s something lost in that mindset. There’s almost no room for muscle, for grit, for the analog ways of doing things — for the hands-on work, the worn tool, the long conversation, the deep connection. At the same time, there’s something beautiful in that old way: putting time in, sweating a little, showing up when it’s hard, leaning on others when the load is heavy.
Because the truth is: we can’t do the great things alone. If you think you’re going to build something meaningful, something that lasts, by yourself — you’re fooling yourself. We need mules and muscle and friends and family and colleagues. We need people standing beside us, lifting us up, pushing us forward. That’s where determination meets community. That’s where the real work happens.
In my business, I’ve never truly been “off.” I’ve never believed the day ends at closing time or that the job is done when the last dish is cleared. Because if you believe in doing it well, for others — for the greater good — then there’s always something left to finish, to refine, to share. There’s always a smiling face, a hearty “thank you,” a plate of food bringing people together. And that’s the kind of work I believe matters.
Life is about people. It’s about showing up for your neighbor, for your coworker, for your customer, for your friend. It’s about saying yes when someone asks for help, and saying yes when no one asks but you know it needs doing. It’s about being part of something bigger than yourself — a community that holds you up, and one you hold up in return.
When you slow down, you see the threads that bind us: the dinner table, the laugh after a long shift, the hands of two people lifting the same heavy thing, the voices of the people who count on you and the people you count on. There’s something to be said about that kind of work — slow, steady, real—and the kind of longevity it builds. Not just for a business or a brand, but for life. For relationships. For the places and people we call home.
So today, let me ask you: What are you refusing to throw away? What are you repairing? Who are you leaning on — and who is leaning on you? In a world built to discard, let’s be the ones committed to staying, to fixing, to serving, to building together.
Because the analog way still works. Because slow, good work still matters. Because people still matter. And because community — real, messy, beautiful community — is the pillar of everything that lasts.
