Meet Matt! Putting Our New Banquet and Catering Manager in the Hot Seat

He’s got drive, he’s got creativity, he’s got a clipboard and knows how to use it. He’s also got answers! Spend a little QT with our newest chief, Matthew Fisher, with a nifty Q&A below.

Hi, Matt! Tell us about your background and how you came into the catering industry.

One of my very first jobs was working at a banquet hall. It’s so funny that 16 years later it has all come full circle. In the time between, I’ve worked just about every position from the back of the house to the front, so I guess you could say I have always had a passion for hospitality.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

The feeling of executing an event, presenting a dish or a cocktail. It really is an artform, and the bonus is to see the joy it provides our clients. From imagination to completion, we have a lot of fun.

What is a typical day at AOC like for you?

“Typical” is a rare thing in this business! First and foremost I always stay up to the minute with our calendar and upcoming events, making sure the staff has a copy of the Banquet Event Order and all the tools for success for their day, followed by lots of future planning for polished delivery down the line. There’s always more to do and create, and every event on the calendar can be at a different phase of the process, so no two days are alike. It keeps things very interesting.

What do you hope to bring to the table as the new Banquet Manager?

My theory is it really takes two things to be successful in this industry: putting a fun spin on the day-to-day, while helping the team exceed our clients’ expectations. And if you think about it, those two things go hand in hand. A happy staff delivers a happy result, and the reverse is true, too.

As a manager, what do you expect from your staff?

In short, mutual respect and teamwork. Fortunately since I’ve done their jobs before myself, I know the challenges and what it takes for things to operate smoothly. I hope that alone helps me gain their trust and respect.

Let’s talk about everyone’s favorite subject: Food. How do you think food and dining can elevate a client’s experience?

Obviously the quality of the meal is memorable long after the fact, but first impressions truly matter. Everyone eats with their eyes first, so the presentation really sets the tone and captures their interest.

Okay, let’s broaden things a bit. What are your hobbies and interests?

I’m very passionate about art and music, which definitely translates to certain aspects of my job. Aside from that I really like to get out and be among nature, especially if it means spending time with my dogs.

Anything else you would like to share?

I could not be happier to have joined the All Occasions team, and I’m extremely excited to see where the future takes us!
